Hi,

I moved to Nunhead recently and I'm hoping someone can suggest things I can do with my 13 month old daughter? There really are only so many times I can push the buggy round the duck pond and it'd be nice to meet some other local Mums, as well as giving her some new things to do. She's not walking yet so would need to be ok for a crawler and as I'm now bck at work I'm limited to Mondays and Tuesday or the weekend.

Thanks

Hi,
Does anyone here know the steps to get someone to take a look at installing some traffic calming measures onto Borland Road (the stretch that leads on to Limesford Road)? I looked on Southwark Council website but can't see anything relevant.
The stretch of road here is only about 100 yards long and has a tight bend at each end but the chicane type layout only seems to encourage people to drive like idiots. We had someone driving round the block at 4am a few weekends back, the tyres were screeching like mad and every time they passed by I was waiting for the crash. My particular favourite is the moron teenager who passes down here at at least five times a day at full speed on his scooter driving one-handed while texting on his mobile. At least his family won't have far to travel to visit him in the cemetery next door.

Fibre (optic cable) To The Cabinet is supposedly going live in December this year at New Cross exchange (which Im guessing supplies most of Nunhead's broadband, new cabinets have already been installed outside Nunhead station) and will enable speeds of up to 40mbps against the maximum 3mbps I currently get with O2.

Has anyone enquired with their broadband supplier if they will be offering faster broadband then you currently get? I called O2 and the person I spoke to had no idea what FTTC stood for and had to google it..... I know that December is still a few months away, but I know I'd like to benefit from faster broadband when it becomes available......

Obviously all of London has planes, and we just have to live with it, however the last couple of weeks they seem much noisier than normal? I tried to search online, found a thread on a Dulwich forum (where the poor guy asking got slammed by the forum members), then found my way here... Anyway I'm more curious than complaining, probably a combination of the hot weather, hence sleeping with one's windows open, and atmospheric conditions. Yet they do appear visiibly larger to the naked eye at times too.

It was intended to be for young people with support needs, but due to a mix-up, I think on the Summer University website, it wasn't advertised as such. Only 2 children have attended (including mine)so far, and the organiser said it is o.k. to open it out to anyone (aged 13 - 16yrs old) Turn up or ring him: Damion 7635 6709.

Items we throw away such as bed, television, clothes, furniture, printer, toys, sofa and computer can pass to someone in your community.

If you haven't heard yet, there is a new wonderful organization called Freegive Group ( http://www.freegive.co.uk ). Free Give Group connects people who are giving and getting unwanted items for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills and, at the same time, helping someone in your community by gifting them the item you no longer need. Another benefit of using Freegive is that it encourages poeple to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. By using Freegive, not only are you able to get rid of your item with the minimum of fuss; you will also be doing your part in stopping another reusable item ending up in a landfill. It's completely free to join.

Freegive group is active in all London boroughs. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/londonfg.htm

Free give group is active in all United Kingdom and other countries across the world. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/groups.htm

How freegive group works:

1. You have a television or clothes or furniture or printer or toys you were going to throw out.
2. You join your local Freegive group.
3. You post an offer on your local Freegive group.
4. People respond to you if they are interested.
5. You pick a recipient and arrange for them to collect the item.
6. They take the item away.
7. You let your local freegive group know that the item is no longer available by posting an item TAKEN message to the group.

Note: If you need an item you can request one on your local freegive group in the same way by posting an item WANTED message to the group and if someone has what you're looking for they will contact you to offer it.

This is a great idea! Encouraging people to reuse and recycle things by giving them away and not sending them to the garbage bin!

I think freegive is a great way to build a bond in the community and it's always good to recycle. I think it's a fantastic idea and everyone should join!

Help pass the word around to your friends, family, church members, workmates and help Freegive Group grow bigger and stronger.

Just a quick bit of praise for the ONH, where we ate last week for the first time since the new owners came in. I had a great dish of haddock (from the local fishmonger) with bacon, peas and a cream sauce on toast. An interesting combo but it really worked. My friend had pan-fried chicken, which she said was great.

According to the above link at findaproperty.com, they allege, very interestingly that:

Baited breath is being held for the promise of an extension of the Docklands Light Railway to East Dulwich - which would have to pass through these parts (SE15) - and a possible link-up to the underground at New Cross and New Cross Gate to the east.

I've not seen this rumour mentioned before - anybody have an inkling if it's a possibility or just fantasy?

Even if it's the latter, at least they end the piece by affirming that "SE15 is the postcode to be at the moment".

Just don't mention Only Fools And Horses, right?

I was on the number 78 bus last weekend when the driver made an announcement saying that as from October the No.78 bus will terminate at Peckham Rye and won't go into Nunhead at all.

The gist of it is to do with the bus company Arriva taking on the contract and wanting all buses on their routes to be double deckers. Because double deckers can't use the route into Nunhead (maybe because of the railway bridge on Evelina Road) the service will ending at Peckham Rye near Tesco.

I've tried calling the tfl bus help line a couple of times to find out more but I've got bored of listening to their auotmated answer machine waiting to speak to an adviser and was wondering if anyone else knows anything about it. It seemed a bit odd with the driver just announcing it like that and I haven't seen or heard anything else official or otherwise.

It would be a shame for Nunhead to lose this service.

Our Mercedes 207D AutoTrail Cherokee motorhome was stolen Wednesday 16 June or Thursday 17 June. Registration: F954 EYA.
It was parked on Borland Road/Hichisson Road, Nunhead/Peckham SE15.

It is (or was) large, white with blue horizontal stripes.
I'm sure it is long gone, but maybe someone might have seen it en route to its new home – it is hard to miss – and perhaps it was being towed?

I'd also like to hear from other people who have had campervans nicked in SE15 recently. The police said they didn't know of other vans stolen round here – but the East Dulwich forum reports a spate of thefts over the last 6 months, so I suspect this isn't an isolated incident.

It appears that the contract for wardenship of Nunhead Cemetery has been awarded to different firm (Labour flexing its muscle in Southwark?), this being the same outfit that operates Camberwell New Cemetery. I've noticed a couple of changes already:

1. On Saturday 5 June the gates remained locked the whole morning. Seems that nobody turned up to unlock them...
2. Opening hours have been reduced from 8am to 7pm. Signs now state 8:30am to 6:30pm.
3. Southwark signs have been erected stating "Dogs must be kept on leads". The previous signs that stipulated that dogs should remain on leads in the area of the tended graves have been removed.

I've been walking dogs in the cemetery for 11 years now and, in common with the majority of responsible dog owners, make sure that my dog keeps out of the area of tended graves - i.e. where burials have taken place over the last 40 years or so and relatives visit. This is a clearly defined area where the grass is kept short.

Has anyone any idea why the new wardens have taken it into their heads to ban the exercise of dogs off the lead throughout the cemetery? There's talk of a dog warden who will patrol the cemetery, although I have seen no evidence of byelaws that would make such a ban enforceable. I'm sure that there have been one or two instances of unruly dogs but why is the first response to take an intolerant attitude towards everyone?

I'm happy to be corrected if I have got this all wrong but...
